Dear Jim,
You were our minister at Our Savior's Lutheran Church with Mike Knudsen. Later in Hawaii. I have often thought of you yet never took steps to locate a bit of your life's path. (Though Google assisted here.) In church this morning I promised myself to do a search. (Christ Lutheran Church, Brea, North Orange County, Calif. - Pastor Dannenbring.) Here I am! First and foremost I do not think I ever thanked you enough for shelter and a job in Hawaii in 1962! It gave me wonderful memories while in the Army - being threatened with the draft almost as I left Hawaii in August. I enlisted, had a safe three year term, and am comfortable with my life and now, retirement.
I found Myrus Knudsen, though was sad that he passed away. And I am blessed with a WONDERFUL wife, three daughters, and two grandsons (one adopted from Mexico) and a granddaughter.
Your wife and family? I hope all are well; you are a good person by bringing orphaned children into your family.
I call John Moe (at least once a decade) to update with him.

Thank you so much for being so VERY welcoming to my daughter, Erin, and I on the 8th of August. We are planning on coming to Hawaii in 2011, and were looking for a church as part of the "thinking" process. You all impressed us with you openness and willingness to accept us, even though we were visitors.
We are hoping and praying that Erin gets accepted to UH-Manoa in the fall of 2011, and that I can find employment, a residence, and the funding to make it all possible. Hawaii is the home of our hearts and dreams.

In Toronto, we make free resumes, teach free English weekly, and do free translations/interpretations in 17 languages to any church or organization that asks us to (worldwide.) Firstly, please pray for that my mother was cheated by Mr. Kwong, Mr Ho, Hin Chai and Anna years before, she went to a company and worked as an Office assistant, but they cheated my mother, and compelled my mother to give her money out to them(they cheated my mother that the money was used for investment, and the investment was failured), and went away, thank God for that the policemen arrested Mr. Kwong now, but the Mr. Ho , Hin Chai and Anna were still not arrested, please pray for that God can help the policemen in the investigation, and find the evidence to accuse the Mr. Kwong and his helper in the judiciary court, thank God for that the policemen sent us several letters till now about that the investigation is in the progressing, please pray for that God can move their heart, Mr. Kwong , Mr. Ho, Hin Chai and Anna will regret about that they cheated my mother, and they can have pity on my mother , and return the money back to my mother , thank you.

I lived in HI and was part of Calvary from '82 to '84. I am curious how to contact Doug & Ivy and how they are doing. Over the years I have done bits of the Course in Miracles and right now am really doing it very dedicated and having some miracles because of it. Hello Everyone:
I attended Calvary Lutheran Church in the 70's and remember Tuesday Night Group in the old parish house on the beach. I was married there to Holly Hebgen in 1970 in the old church by the highway.
Doug Olson is my son's Godfather. I remember Intern Pastor Dave Lura, and church member Warren Stewart. Does anyone remember me?

Hello.
I attended Calvary by the Sea while stationed in Pearl Harbor from 1993 to 1996. I plan to return to Hawaii this summer for my wedding and am looking for a lutheran pastor to perform the ceremony. I got to know Doug Olson while there and am wondering if he still performs weddings. Is there a way to contact him?

Do you remember me? I used to attend Calvary in the mid to late '80's. You have no idea how often I
think of Calvary and the many friends I made there. Here I am sitting in my office and trying to concentrate
on work but being distracted by the snow storm and wishing I were some where warm. Just thought I
might check to see if Calvary had a website and sure enough you do. YEA!
I take it Doug and Ivy Olson have retired. What a profound impact he made on my life. I shall never
forget them. What a wonderful impact Calvary made on me. It is only with fond memories that I think of
you all and what a wonderful surprise to see you still there.
I realize you are quite busy, but if you remember me and if you ever have a few minutes, I would welcome
a note from you.

I stumbled across this site tonight. This church, which I will probably always call, Calvary Lutheran Church, was pretty much the place I grew up in. We moved to Hawaii in 1956 and for the next ten years, my family lived on the second floor of the parish house. I was so blessed to be able to roam the beach as a child, to play in the trees on the adjoining lot, that once was owned by the Wild family. The Bayers lived on the other side of the property. I have seen Doris Gjervik on the mainland a few times. She attended the funerals of both of my parents, Don and Jean Agrimson.

I was in Owatonna Mn at 90th birthday party for a friend from the trailer club with my Mom and Dad. They mentioned you, and through the wonderful power of the inter-net I found this web site. It is so great to be able to see you and your family and even hear you preach. I want you to know that I think of your Mom and Dad often and they are in my prayers. I have to run because choir practice starts shortly .

Reverend Douglas Olson married me and my "favorite" husband, Dr. Daniel I. Axelrod, on April 6, 1985 in the beautiful setting outside in the back of the church at the ocean with clear views of Diamond Head and Co-co Head. It was 80 degrees, and my daughter, who was just eight years old, my future husband and I travelled from Davis, CA, to Hawaii. Once on Ohau, we met Dan's son, who was a Marine stationed in Honolulu, his wife and their son for the marriage ceremony at the church. None of us had yet met face-to-face with Rev. Olson, but we had spoken with him from the mainland on the telephone once to set up the wedding date and time. We felt immediately comfortable with him, and found he was the perfect person to marry us! We met him at the church about an hour before the scheduled time of the ceremony that gorgeous April afternoon. It was Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Originally, I had thought of having a Rabbi perform the ceremony, but there wasn't one available. Neither of us were religious, but we both came from Jewish backgrounds. Reverend Olson provided a "custom" ceremony that was wonderfully warm and alive, as he carefully edited out references to Jesus Christ, at our request. That was so kind of the Reverend...he merely substituted "God" each time. We hired a pair of local videographers and captured the lovely ceremony on videotape, which I treasure to this day. You see, Dr. Axelrod, my beloved husband, passed away 10 years ago this month. I miss him every day. We had a beautiful 13 year, two-month long marriage and he was a wonderful stepfather to my daughter who is now 31 years old. Today I am so blessed to be visiting a couple here on the Wayward side of the island, and they have agreed to bring me to the services tomorrow, June 22, 2008 at 10 a.m. Dan was a wonderful husband and world-class environmentalist, and we were married by a world-class minister, Reverend Olson. I hope he is still living. I never expected to find him still working at the church, but am heartened that when I meet the current minister tomorrow, he will know the Reverend Olson. More than anything, I want to stand one more time on the grounds where that exceptional ceremony was held more than 23 years ago, when I was honored to become the wife of an exceptional man Dr. Daniel I. Axelrod. I am so grateful. My love to him, and gratitude for Douglas Olson and his family, as well as the congregation and administrators of Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church.

I just visited your website, my brother having sent me a link this morning. It brought tears to my eyes, to say the least! My parents and I moved to Honolulu in 1954 (my brother was born there), and became members of Calvary in early 1956. The church was our religious and social anchor for several years until we moved to the windward side, and then returned to the mainland in 1960. I have never returned to Hawaii since, but websites such as yours certainly are an encouragement to do so. I have fond memories of VBS and pastor Gjervik during my pre-teen years.
It appears from the photographs that your new sanctuary is in the location of what was an older, large home that sat on the property near the beach. It is a spectacularly beautiful building.
