Aloha Tim,
I was in Owatonna Mn at  90th birthday party for a friend from the trailer club with my Mom and Dad. They mentioned you, and through the wonderful power of the inter-net I found this web site. It is so great to be able to see you and your family and even hear you preach. I want you to know that I think of your Mom and Dad often and they are in my prayers. I have to run because choir practice starts shortly .

Reverend Douglas Olson married me and my "favorite" husband, Dr. Daniel I. Axelrod, on April 6, 1985 in the beautiful setting outside in the back of the church at the ocean with clear views of Diamond Head and Co-co Head. It was 80 degrees, and my daughter, who was just eight years old, my future husband and I travelled from Davis, CA,  to Hawaii. Once on Ohau, we met Dan's son, who was a Marine stationed in Honolulu, his wife and their son for the marriage ceremony at the church. None of us had yet met face-to-face with Rev. Olson, but we had spoken with him from the mainland on the telephone once to set up the wedding date and time. We felt immediately comfortable with him, and found he was the perfect person to marry us! We met him at the church about an hour before the scheduled time of the ceremony that gorgeous April afternoon. It was Saturday, the day before Easter Sunday. Originally, I had thought of having a Rabbi perform the ceremony, but there wasn't one available. Neither of us were religious, but we both came from Jewish backgrounds. Reverend Olson provided a "custom" ceremony that was wonderfully warm and alive, as he carefully edited out references to Jesus Christ, at our request. That was so kind of the Reverend...he merely substituted "God" each time. We hired a pair of local videographers and captured the lovely ceremony on videotape, which I treasure to this day. You see, Dr. Axelrod, my beloved husband, passed away 10 years ago this month. I miss him every day. We had a beautiful 13 year, two-month long marriage and he was a wonderful stepfather to my daughter who is now 31 years old. Today I am so blessed to be visiting a couple here on the Wayward side of the island, and they have agreed to bring me to the services tomorrow, June 22, 2008 at 10 a.m. Dan was a wonderful husband and world-class environmentalist, and we were married by a world-class minister, Reverend Olson. I hope he is still living. I never expected to find him still working at the church, but am heartened that when I meet the current minister tomorrow, he will know the Reverend Olson. More than anything, I want to stand one more time on the grounds where that exceptional ceremony was held more than 23 years ago, when I was honored to become the wife of an exceptional man Dr. Daniel I. Axelrod. I am so grateful. My love to him, and gratitude for Douglas Olson and his family, as well as the congregation and administrators of Calvary by the Sea Lutheran Church.

I just visited your website, my brother having sent me a link this morning.  It brought tears to my eyes, to say the least!  My parents and I moved to Honolulu in 1954 (my brother was born there), and became members of Calvary in early 1956.  The church was our religious and social anchor for several years until we moved to the windward side, and then returned to the mainland in 1960.  I have never returned to Hawaii since, but websites such as yours certainly are an encouragement to do so.  I have fond memories of VBS and pastor Gjervik during my pre-teen years.

It appears from the photographs that your new sanctuary is in the location of what was an older, large home that sat on the property near the beach.   It is a spectacularly beautiful building.

Thank you for sharing these wonderful images,

Stephanie, Parish Assistant:

I did (finally) receive the Chrismas card from a friend that kept arriving at the church -2 times!
My address was correct on the front. Who knows why you kept receiving it?

Thank you so much for taking the time and caring by sending it on personally to me. I am most grateful and do appreciate it!

Rhonda Bolles, Fri Mar 30 2007, 11:27am

I have received a military assignment to Hickam for May 2008 and am looking for an ELCA affiliated Lutheran Church.  I came across your website and was wondering if this church is ELCA?  Also, I will be looking for housing for me and my two dogs.

Alison, Tue Jan 23 2007, 01:01am

Hello. The last time I visited Calvary by the Sea was seven years ago, in 2000. That was for my graduation, I was five then. Now, I am eleven, and having stumbled across this site in my quest for information for a project, I found that Ms. Lisa from my current school was Ms. Lisa at my pre-school! It's funny how things just seem to spring back at you when you least expect it. I remember my friends, and a couple of my teachers. I especially remember one, my best friend, Samantha Beyer. Even though we live in different states now, we're still best friends, and keep in constant contact. I have other friends, Noelle, Phoebe, and yet others who attended this beautiful school in years past.

I just came to sign this to say that I remember learning at the school, and I remember Chapel, every Friday, and the light shining through the windows would be the most beautiful thing imaginable. And then, I remember those long, playful walks on the beach at the end of the day, in Kindergarten. But what I remember most is all of the fun I had at school. Calvary was a place to be at home, to love. It was my favorite place, besides with my family, to be, and I was almost in tears, almost begging for the school to extend and have a first grade. But I didn't, and my life has been blessed, it seems. It's so good to be able to remember.

My father and I drive by Calvary every day on my way to school and back. And every time I look at the crosses on the front, I remember asking my teacher, 'Why are those crosses there, Ms. Christine?' Maybe one day I'll forget, but for now, as long as I live here, and pass it every day, no many how many years pass, I'll remember all of the good times spend at Calvary, and I'll remember the nourishment and love that you all provided. I know I don't sound like an eleven year old girl, but I am. I really am.

Aloha to you all,
Alison

Aloha!
My family and I are coming to visit family in Nov (17 - 24) and would love to attend a service (the only date would be Nov 19).  We belong to the New Hope Lutheran Church in Columbia, Maryland (ELCA).  I was born and raised in Honolulu and moved to the east coast in the 80's, and actually lived in Kuliouou.  If there would be no conflict, please let me know.  God Bless, Milton Okamoto.

Kristin Bergquist, Thu May 04 2006, 03:38am

It is good to page through your web site and see all the growth that has happened since my last visit to Calvary by the Sea in 1989.  At the time I was visiting with my then brother and sister in law, Doug and Ivy Olson.

Aloha

God bless you!

Ralph Minton, Thu Feb 23 2006, 05:57am

My wife Beth and I will be traveling with two other couples and will be in Hawaii on 26 Feb 06.  We will be staying at Bellows Air Station and were wondering if your congregation will be having Ash Wed services on 1 Mar 06?  I have sent an earlier message and to date have not had a response.

It was wonderful visiting  Calvary By The Sea during October and November of last year. I guess you just know how to make me feel welcome because I'll be back. In August my son will be transfored to be stationed at Pearl Harbor so I plan to spend the month of October at his house. So, I am truly looking forward to seeing all of you again and worshipping with you. Really though, my heart longs for Puna. Sincerely and in the Lord's grace, Susan

Patty Bloom, Wed Nov 16 2005, 10:16pm

Aloha and may each of you share God's many blessings!  I just stopped by your website to reminice - I created some wonderful memories of time spent with you during extended annual vacations in the '80s and '90s.  My family still speaks often of Louisa, April and Mina with love and fond affection as we think back on our communion with such lovely people.  It truly was our honor to host these lovely ladies when they had need of shelter in Minneapolis during a conference.

For those of you who may remember, my parents are Jim and June Bloom.  We lost Mom three years ago and her health wasn't good for a few years prior to her passing.  We know she is rejoicing in her new home with Christ our Lord - full of glory and free of the pains and trials her earthly body bestowed upon her.  I'm saddened to hear of Ivy's passing.  Perhaps Mom and Ivy are planning the future for a whole new kind of Angel Network together!

Though it's been years since I've been back - I still keep CBTS in my prayers.  Should anyone reading this see Louisa and/or Gordon and the girls, April or Mina (I understand she married and moved to the mainland several years ago) - or is in contact with Norris and Deloris of Sand and Sea rentals - please pass along my greetings.  I'd love to hear from anyone and find out what is happening with the congregation of CBTS.

Wishing all of you the peace and joy He brings when we live in his light.

Aloha,

Patty Bloom

Doru Roll, Tue Sep 13 2005, 01:49pm

Friends,

By chance I became aware of the untimely passing of John "Jay" Magin, whom I knew some 20 years ago when we both worked at Grumman on Long Island.

I was a young engineer, John was the seasoned mentor I needed, and we meshed very well from the start. In time as he moved to Hawaii and I temporarely abandoned amateur radio (a hobby John helped me get stated in) due to famuly obligations, we fell out of touch. Only today I heard of his passing from a common friend, also an amateur radio operator.

Please do me the kindness to convey my sincerest condoleances to John's family: Judy, Janis and John. Though I doubt they will remember me these days, they may find a little comfort in knowing that, despite the distance and passage of time, their husband and father is still remembered by those who called him a friend.

God Bless,
Doru

Kathy, Wed May 25 2005, 12:24am

I have been visiting on Sundays recently, are your services at 10am always so long? They are lovely, but i get so hungry. Do you ever have fellowship and lunch after the 10 am service? People seem to run off, but I guess they are hungry too.

George Timmers, Sun May 15 2005, 01:37am

Hoping to stop by soon.

My cousin, Riho, will have a wedding at Calvary by the Sea next Monday so I was checking the address on website. She just lost her dad by cancer. How she wishes he would be there! Anyway, I wish her and her new family the best. Looking forward to being at the wedding there.

Pastor David G. Lura, Sat Feb 05 2005, 04:01am

Greetings to Pastor Tim and all those new to CBTS. I worked with Doug Olson from June 1971-May 1975 as an unofficial intern while I served in the U.S. Navy. I later attended Wartburg Theological Seminary and graduated from the Iliff School of Theology, Denver, Colorado. I serve a United Methodist Church in Oak Harbor, Washington. Dale & Alice Noble and Bob Flowers are two names of friends from over 30 years ago. Jim & Marci Walters live near us here on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound north of Seattle, Washington. Blessings and Aloha.

We are returning to Hawaii this spring and I was searching for an ELCA congregation to visit. We are both Cap grads ('74) and wonder if your pastor is the same Doc G that we remember? We hope to join you for church on May 29th. It looks like a beautiful place to worship. Beth (Heilener) + Alan Schnitkey
